Getting through airport security

What to expect and do at the checkpoint, step by step.

  1. 1

    Before you reach the front

Have your boarding pass (on your phone or printed) and ID ready. Start taking laptops and large electronics out of your bag and emptying your pockets.

Good to know: Watching what the people ahead of you do is a great guide — you can just copy their steps.

  2. 2

    At the bin table

Put your bag, jacket, and electronics into the trays. At many airports you’ll also remove shoes and belt — signs and officers will tell you. Slide your trays onto the belt.

💬 “Do I need to take my shoes off?” is a completely normal thing to ask an officer.

  3. 3

    Walking through the scanner

An officer waves you forward when it’s your turn — wait for the signal. Step in, stand on the footprints, and raise your arms if it’s the body scanner. It takes a few seconds.

Good to know: If an officer says “hold on” or raises a hand, just wait — it’s routine, not a problem with you.

  4. 4

If they check you or your bag

Sometimes they swab your hands or re-scan a bag, or do a quick pat-down of an area. They’ll explain first, and you can mention sensitivities or ask for a moment.

💬 “Could you let me know before you touch me, please?”

  5. 5

    After

Collect your things, then step to the side (don’t block the belt) to put your shoes and belt back on. That’s it — head to your gate.
