Checking into a hotel

Front desk, key cards, and asking for things.

  1. 1

    At the front desk

Say you’re checking in and give your name and ID. They may ask for a card for incidentals — usually a temporary hold, not a charge.

💬 “Hi, I’m checking in — last name [your name].”

  2. 2

    What they’ll tell you

They’ll hand you a key card and mention breakfast times, Wi-Fi, and your floor. It’s fine to ask them to repeat anything.

💬 “Sorry — which floor, and which way are the elevators?”

  3. 3

    Your key card

Tap or insert it at your door (and sometimes the elevator). If it stops working, just go back to the desk — it only needs re-activating.

  4. 4

    Asking for things later

Call the front desk (often “0” on the room phone) for extra towels, late checkout, or directions.
